Mr M conference update

Hi everyone, it is the morning of the last day of the conference. I have had a couple of days of some very engaging speakers with topics ranging from letting students be the teacher, looking into the future, thinking about what a leader is ,brain-based learning and what is inquiry learning? I get to have a play with some LEGO robotics this morning prior to the final Keynote Speaker of the conference. It has been a great week in terms of professional development and I'm sure much of what I've heard with be beneficial to me in the future. GPM

Learning@School 2011 - Rotorua

The teacher is at a conference. I arrived safely on Tuesday afternoon and after a couple of small issues I checked into my motel and settled in. Wednesday morning - have registered and am now sitting and waiting for the conference to start. It begins with a welcome to all delegates and no doubt there will be some changes to the programme with the events in Christchurch. The images on the TV are absolutely terrible and incomprehensible to those not on the ground in the city. After, there is the first keynote speaker followed by a day of breakouts (workshops). I'm looking forward to it and will try to post regular updates.

Room 6 Tomarata School News/Notes/Comments

Hello Parents/Caregivers and families,

Hi everyone. The year is flying by...

It has been a very busy time for Room 6. We have farewelled Michelle Carmichael last week. She is a 3rd year teaching student from Auckland University. During the first 4 weeks of Term 3, Michelle had full control of the class and did a terrific job. The class adjusted well to her slightly different teaching style and routine and enabled her to learn and develop as a teacher.

We have a focus on Electricity this term - safety, generation, usage, sustainability and we will be looking and circuits and making are own circuits to insert into games the children will be developing.

Term 4 will have the theme of "Risk, Safety, and Response". We will look at a wide range of things from 1st Aid and Fire Safety to involving the students in assessing the risks different activities may pose at Camp.

Speaking of Camp, this will be held during the week 12-16 November at Marsden Point Christian Camp, One Tree Point. We are busy planning and preparing. Whilst some costs are still to be finalised, we have indicated in newsletters the cost will be approx $120 per student. Further details will follow in due course.

The enrolment process for the transition to Rodney College has begun. Interviews are coming up and testing for Year 8s will occur in Term 4.

Term 4 also sees Inter-school cross country and cricket. I am in the process of arranging some coaching sessions with Northland Cricket early in Term 4 - watch this space.

Show Day is the first Friday back after the October school holidays. All students in Room 6 are expected to participate and contribute - I would like to see either a lamb/calf, a garden, a pet, or sculpture from as many students as possible. All students will be required to make as many indoor exhibits as possible. It is much more fun for the students if they join in fully.
